Kölsch and altbier

Kölsch

Kölsch is a name protected by the Kölsch Convention for a light, highly fermented, hoppy top-fermented beer style that may only be brewed in Cologne and the surrounding area. The traditional beer is filtered and has an alcohol content of between 4.4 and 5.2% vol. It is typically drunk from a 0.2l "Stange". The ideal food to serve is low-fat fish, light potato dishes and colorful salads.

Altbier

The Altbier (“old” beer style”) comes mainly from the neighboring city of Düsseldorf and describes a top-fermented beer with an amber to copper-like beer color and a distinct bitterness. It normally has an alcohol content of around 5% vol., stronger variants are called “Sticke” (bock beer) or “Doppelsticke (double bock). The Altbier goes well with a Rhenish Sauerbraten and other hearty dishes with dark sauce.
