Abro Bryggeri

At the moment, Sweden is the dream country for many: its dense forests, dotted with light birch trees and lush blueberry bushes, are perfect for hiking and cycling, the expansive lakes with their cold, clear water are perfect for a boat trip or a dip in the cool water, the minimalist red wooden houses exude coziness and the country's many delicacies such as cinnamon rolls, fish, meatballs or homemade crispbread are just waiting to be tasted and the local beer is also fine. A traditional brewery from Sweden is the Åbro Bryggeri, whose wonderful beer specialties we offer here.

A bumpy start

The founder of the brewery is Per Luthander. In 1856, the lieutenant was between two missions and wanted to settle down in idyllic Småland for a while. Together with a master brewer from Germany, he built up the Åbro brewery and began brewing. After just a year, however, the master brewer left the company and Anders Andersson took over the post first and then, when Luthander was deployed on his next military mission, the brewery as well. At that time, the Swedish beer market was highly competitive: the towns and villages had a large number of small microbreweries and the competition was fierce. At the same time, inspired by Great Britain and America, the first ideas and calls for a nationwide alcohol ban were being made. The population's consumption had reached a worrying level and many sides were calling for a significant restriction or even a ban on alcohol consumption. After no unanimous opinion could be found on this issue, an agreement was reached on rationing. Complicated times for a brewery, but Åbro survived the turbulence. In the midst of the heated debates, Axel Hermann Johansson took over the brewery. Johansson's descendants still run the company today.

A crisis-proof company

Despite the rationing, Åbro managed to gain a foothold in Sweden's beer landscape. Employees were hired and the brewery expanded in proportion to the growing output. Although production was now running well, most of the employees still had a second job: many of them were farmers, shoveled snow in the winter or found work in other ways. When the brewery reached an output of one million bottles in one month, many of the employees were able to quit their part-time jobs and also received the finest coffee as commission. The Dunge family led the brewery through all the crises and disasters of the past with a firm hand, a lot of heart and a passion for good beer and made Åbro a permanent fixture in Sweden. We value the brewery above all for its delicious beers. The hand-brewed specialties are characterized by taste, quality and a certain amount of hygge.
