In the venerable building of the oldest preserved terminus in the world, a speciality from long-forgotten days is brewed: Gose. The sour beer with salt and coriander is a beer specialty from Goslar, which also had its heyday in Leipzig in the 18th century. After that, Gose fell into oblivion and was only brought back from obscurity with the advent of craft beer in Germany. The Bayerischer Bahnhof brewery is considered an absolute Gose hotspot and brews other exciting beers in addition to the original Leipzig Gose.
Not many breweries are located in buildings as historically relevant and interesting as the old Bavarian train station. It looks back on an eventful time and seems to be just the right place to revive a beer steeped in history such as Gose. After the first section of the station was ceremoniously inaugurated in 1842, it reached its economic peak just 35 years later. Kings and princes walked through the hallowed halls and gave the magnificent building additional splendor. A century after the inauguration, large parts of the Bavarian train station were destroyed by an Allied bombing raid. For many years, the demolition of the station was planned until it was finally listed as a historical monument in 1975 and could thus be saved.
After the extensive restoration of the station, it was reopened in 2000: the building now houses the Gasthaus & Gosebrauerei Bayerischer Bahnhof project. This new restaurant landscape is reminiscent of the hustle and bustle of old and attracts a large audience, not just for events and functions.
The creative mind behind the kettle is Matthias Richter, who has been brewing for the Bayerischer Bahnhof since 2003. The master brewer is committed to the renaissance of Leipziger Gose and to brewing surprising, varied beers. In cooperation with young craft beer breweries, hits such as Schampus Weiß Vintage 2017 , another sour beer from the Bayerischer Bahnhof, are created. His beer is particularly popular not only in his own bar, but also in America. Richter even creates beers that are shipped exclusively to the USA. In addition to Gose, the Bayerischer Hof specialty is naturally cloudy beer. To produce this type of beer, the yeast is not filtered out after the brewing process; the beer is bottled unfiltered, giving it its characteristic cloudiness.
Gose connoisseurs toast each other with the word Goseanna.
