Although one of the most famous examples of the craft beer scene is named after the place, the India Pale Ale owes its name not to the brewing art of the Indian population, but to a dark time in history when their home was invaded by colonial powers. Beer had been brewed in India for centuries before, but the traditional creations differed significantly from European tastes. This was not least due to the ingredients: instead of grain, rice was and is largely used in India. One brewery that has brought Indian brewing into the spotlight of global attention over the last few years is Bira 91.
From Belgium to India
The young label was founded in 2015. However, the company did not start its first brewing attempts on home soil, but in Belgium. The brewers chose this location because of the raw materials they needed: grains, yeast and hops are more affordable in Europe and available everywhere. The beer produced in Flanders was sent to India after the brewing process was completed. When the brewery achieved its first successes and its name became established in its homeland, they moved across the pond with everything they had. Due to the refined taste of their beers and their smooth, mild character, Bira 91 quickly became one of the most popular breweries in their country. Today brewing takes place in five different breweries and the company employs more than 600 people. The beers are enjoyed in 18 countries around the world and have earned Bira 91 the title of India's most awarded brewery.
