There are few marketing coups that are as successful as this sentence. Everyone has heard it before and used it to order a crisp pilsner from the Eifel. We would like to introduce you to the brewery behind this stroke of genius.rn

A family business with vision

Even if you wouldn't suspect it thanks to its modern design, the Bitburger brewery looks back on more than 200 years of brewing tradition. The founding father is Johann Peter Wallenborn, who decided to open his own brewery in 1817. A few years later, his son-in-law Ludwig Bertrand Simon takes over the brewery and drives sales up. The introduction of bottled beer increases sales even more. The first pilsner from Bitburger is brewed on January 15, 1883. Johann's grandson Theobald is responsible for this pioneering step. Pilsner was not even a recognized type of beer at the time; each pilsner was tested individually. But it is not just the brewing of this then still exotic beer style that shows that the Bitburgers were true avant-gardists: they were also among the first breweries to export their beer abroad. Barrels were transported from Bitburg to Luxembourg by horse-drawn cart. In addition to numerous technical achievements, the brewery also drilled its own deep well and from then on brewed with the good Eifel water from a depth of 100 meters. And the Bitburgers were also pioneers with their first own laboratory in 1921: even at the beginning of the 20th century, the brewers were concerned with quality control. rn

Pils from passion

Bitburger's success story is unstoppable, especially after the beer received a gold medal for excellent taste and outstanding quality at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. Shortly before, graphic designer GH Heimig developed the beer connoisseur on the Bitburger logo. The Second World War ushered in dark years that did not pass the brewery unscathed: large parts of the buildings were destroyed. But the fighting spirit of the brewing family remained undiminished and reconstruction began shortly after the end of the war. In 1951, the time had come and Germany's most famous beer slogan was born. It took another 20 years before the brewery decided to focus entirely on brewing Pilsner beer. Since then, output has risen continuously and the family business has devoted itself to sustainability in addition to brewing: with a sustainability strategy, the brewery is committed to protecting the environment, the people in the company and the region, and the responsible enjoyment of beer. rn
