Brauerei zur Malzmühle

Cologne is not only known for its stately cathedral, the city on the Rhine also attracts visitors with its world-famous beer. No visit to Cologne without Kölsch and the people of Cologne themselves like to drink a stick of the tasty local specialty after work. The Malzmühle Brewery is one of the 24 breweries that are officially allowed to brew Kölsch as part of the Kölsch Convention.

Girl power

Grain and cereals were already sold at the Cologne Heumarkt in the Middle Ages. Bakers and brewers came here to equip themselves with the raw materials for their craft. In 1858, a particularly clever head among the brewers decided to save himself the trip to the Heumarkt from then on and founded the “Hubert Koch Beer and Malt Extract Steam Brewery” directly on site. After Mr. Koch's management, the brewery became the property of the related Schwartz family and from 1912 was called “Brauerei zur Malzmühle”, which it still has today. The history of the brewery is characterized by strong women: after the death of her husband, Margaretha Schwartz ran the company and even during the Second World War there was a woman at the helm. Sybille Schwartz had to witness the complete destruction of the brewery in the bombing raids during the war; all that remained of the brewery was the portal. But Sybille did not lose her courage and began rebuilding shortly after the end of the war: in 1948, brewing was possible again, even if you could only take the beer with you or drink it outdoors. The next woman at the helm was Anneliese Schwartz, who took over the brewery - now fully rebuilt - in 1960. She helped the Malzmühle brewery regain its former glory and made her house a popular meeting point for Cologne residents. However, the most famous guest at the malt mill was former President of the United States Bill Clinton. The politician was in Cologne on business and chose the Malzmühle to drink a cool Kölsch with his entourage.

Tradition with vision

Anyone who thinks that the Cologne people at Malzmühle are resting on their laurels is wrong: the brewery team strives for perfectionism with great commitment and passion. The brewery was expanded, modernized and supplemented with event rooms, a bar and a hotel. A woman still runs the company today: Melanie Schwartz is following in big footsteps and continuing the legacy of Margaretha and Sybille. Tradition is very important in the family business. Even though the beer is now produced using the most modern brewing systems, the focus is still on craftsmanship. Brewing is a real craft and the family recipe for good Mühlen Kölsch is passed down from generation to generation like a treasure.

The Mühlen Kölsch from the brewery at Malzmühle is a sip of Cologne, no matter where you enjoy it.
