The star of Galicia is not an astronomical formation in the night sky, but a brewery that has been brewing the finest beer for more than 100 years. Estrella Galicia is based on the hard work of the Rivera family and is still independent and family-run today.
The founder of the brewery is José María Rivera Corral, a globetrotter from Chamoselo, Spain. After traveling to Cuba and Mexico, he came up with the idea of opening his own brewery. He found suitable premises in a historic beer and ice cream factory in the Cuatro Caminos district of A Coruña and began brewing. Less than ten years later, the next generation of his family prepared to continue the company: Ramón Rivera Illade became the first trained master brewer in Spain and joined the company. It was also Ramón who brought the aging halls up to the latest technical standards and was able to significantly increase output with this clever move. The modernization also allowed the team to experiment with other beer styles. In order to present the new creations in a fitting manner, Estrella Galicia opened a beer garden directly adjacent to the brewery. The wars in the first half of the 20th century brought with them shortages of raw materials and posed major challenges for the brewery. At times, the brewery even had to be stopped, but no one was laid off. After the brewery recovered from the horrors of the war, things started to improve again. The third and fourth generations became involved in the day-to-day running of the company and the premises were modernized and expanded again. To this day, Estrella Galicia is in the hands of the Rivera family and is flourishing.
In addition to their tireless commitment to producing the best beer, the brewery team has been working for two decades to revive traditional hop cultivation in Galicia. After the project was launched in 2004, they can now brew with the fine regional hops. With hops of outstanding quality, a lot of dedication and artisanal brewing, the Rivera family has put together a range of four beers. Our favourite is Estrella Galicia Especial , a light-hearted lager that goes perfectly with Spanish cuisine and impresses with its drinkable character. Like all beers from Estrella Galicia, Especial is brewed with hand-picked ingredients and, once the brewing process is complete, has the opportunity to mature in peace to reach its full glory.
