In heraldry, the lion stands for admirable qualities such as courage, strength and majesty. Countless coats of arms focus on the majestic animal and symbolize the dominion and nobility of their families. The Bavarian state coat of arms also contains two magnificent lions and in the state capital Munich, the big cat can be found everywhere. For example, on the coat of arms and in the name of Löwenbräu: The traditional Munich brewery has been contributing the finest brews to the beer landscape of its city for an incredible 500 years and does so under the watchful eye of a lion.
It all began at Löwengrube 17 in Munich, where master brewer Jörg Schnaitter lived. His mention in the city register was the first indication of brewing activity at this location. The highly official start of the brewery dates back to 1746, when Löwenbräu was first entered by name in the beer brewery register. After centuries of leisurely brewing, brewer Georg Brey bought the establishment in 1818 and, with hard work and commitment, ensured that Löwenbräu blossomed into Munich's largest brewery. His efforts were rewarded with large sales figures and the brewery was able to be expanded and modernized. A second location was opened and Georg conquered completely new territory with Bock beer. In 1863, Löwenbräu accounted for a quarter of the total beer output in the state capital, demonstrating its place at the top of the city's breweries. The Löwenbräukeller was opened, it was awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition, it began exporting its beer specialties, it served litres of beer at the Oktoberfest and it joined forces with other breweries to meet the increasing demand. Despite the setbacks in the First and Second World Wars, the history of Löwenbräu is a real success story.
To this day, Löwenbräu is one of the largest and most successful breweries in Munich and plays its part in the lively city life. Year after year, thousands of people gather in the Löwenbräu marquee at the Wiesn and drink the Oktoberfest beer brewed especially for the occasion, or come together in the beer garden to enjoy freshly tapped beer and hearty food. All Löwenbräu beers are produced according to the guidelines of the Bavarian Purity Law and contain selected raw materials from the region. While the barley grows in the sunny fields of Bavaria and the hops are picked in the surrounding hop gardens, the crystal-clear water is drawn directly from the brewery's own well and the yeast is of its own breed.
