Spessart Brauerei

The Spessart is a German low mountain range that attracts countless holidaymakers every year with its extensive mixed forests, magnificent castles and picturesque churches. A well-developed network of hiking trails runs through the entire region and leads past vineyards, medieval fortifications, sections of the Limes and idyllic villages. Large parts of the Spessart are designated nature reserves and are home to a wealth of animal and plant species. The Spessart probably takes its name from a local bird: it is assumed that the word is composed of the earlier terms for woodpecker and forest. The woodpecker forest is a place of peace and relaxation, which is not least thanks to its numerous restaurants and beer gardens. After a hearty hike, you can refresh yourself in the Spessart brewery in Kreuzwertheim, for example.

From the golden lion to the green woodpecker

Kreuzwertheim lies between Aschaffenburg and Würzburg and was once a meeting point for thirsty and hungry travelers. The Spessart brewery dates back to the Golden Lion Inn. This inn was first mentioned in documents in 1741, and brewing had been taking place there since 1809. After 21 years of brewing, the mash paddle was hung up again. It was not until 1887 that the brewery reopened under the leadership of Johann Leonhard Lutz. Because some parts of the old brewing facility were sold, Johann had to improvise: an old washtub served as a brewing kettle, and a disused press was quickly converted into a cooling vessel. The foundation stone for the Spessart brewery was laid. The company received its current name and logo with the green woodpecker in the 1970s. The colorful bird reflects the love of the homeland and pride in the region's vibrant flora and fauna. However, these principles are not only found in the heraldic animal: the team also places great value on regionality in production. The water is drawn from local wells, farmers from the immediate area contribute the grain and the hops come from Franconia.

Quality through conviction

The hand-picked raw materials are processed into the finest beer in accordance with the strict rules of the Bavarian Purity Law. As a traditional brewery, Spassart is committed to craftsmanship: the brewing skills of its ancestors and a wealth of tried-and-tested recipes ensure top-class beer. Maturation in the cool cellar gives the brews the finishing touch. The brewery's range includes classics and seasonal festival beers as well as a range of non-alcoholic soft drinks. The creations represent the Spessart and its attractions with thematically appropriate names, rustic design and the typical down-to-earth nature of the region.
