Tennent Caledonian Breweries

In Glasgow, Scotland, people like to drink beer - just like in the rest of Great Britain. It is believed that the first beer was brewed in Scotland's most populated city at the beginning of the 12th century. What was done by monks back then is now the job of around 20 inner-city breweries, many of which have been around for centuries. One of these traditional breweries is the Wellpark Brewery, which was run by the Tennent family until the 1960s.

From private pleasure to global success

The first in a long line of Tennents to take up the brewing trade was Robert Tennent. He founded his brewery in 1556, laying the foundation for a turbulent saga. His craft beer was so popular with his family and friends that the Tennents were still brewing diligently six generations later. However, the official starting signal was given by the brothers Hugh and Robert: They turned the private brewing pleasure into an official business. Previously, brewing had been done under the table and exclusively for acquaintances, but in 1740 the brothers entered into a professional partnership and founded the first family-run brewery. In the mid-18th century, the brewery briefly housed a monarch and his army, which is recorded in Glasgow's city history. The soldiers appreciated the good beer and the support of the Tennent brothers. Later, their sons followed in their footsteps and expanded the premises. The Wellpark Brewery saw the light of day and achieved countless milestones in the decades that followed. One of these resounding successes was exporting to America. In the 19th century, the Wellpark Brewery was the largest beer exporter in the world - a triumph that the company is still proud of today.

Beer, music, sustainability and charity

Over the course of the brewery's history, the range has been changed, expanded and refined countless times. A highlight from Tennent's pen is the Extra Strong Scottish Lager , which scores with a powerful 9.0% alcohol content and a dangerously drinkable character. It is made with hand-picked raw materials and excellently reflects the traditional brewing art at Tennent. In addition to brewing, the team has its hands full: Since 1994, they have been organizing the T in the Park festival, trying to constantly reduce their ecological footprint, supporting clubs and charities and working to ensure that soon everyone in the world will know the beer with the red T on the label.
