The term shepherd literally means a professional group that earns its living by caring for a flock of sheep. Shepherds take their cattle from meadow to meadow, help with the birth of lambs, look after the sheep, shear their wool, and look after their well-being and health. The term shepherd also appears in religion, but in this context it usually has a figurative meaning and symbolizes protection and care. In both English and German, Schäfer and its English equivalent Shepherd are common surnames and often indicate a past in sheep farming.
The Shepherd family played an important role in the history of Shepherd Neame brewing and, together with partner Percy Beale Neame, gave the company its current name. Percy's descendants are still at the helm of the brewery today.
