The brewing art of the Trappist monks goes back several centuries. As early as the early Middle Ages, these pious men were brewing beer in their monasteries both to quench their own thirst and to meet their living expenses and raise money for charity. There are Trappist monasteries all over the world, but most of them are in Belgium and France. However, not everyone brews their own beer any longer: the list of official Trappist breweries currently includes no more than 11 breweries.
