The word Abita comes from the Choctaw language and means spring or well. And that's exactly where you'll find the brewery of the same name.

Mass with class

Abita was founded in 1986. Back then, the craft beer movement was still in its infancy, but Abita was at the forefront. In the first year, the team brewed 1,500 barrels of beer and were virtually overwhelmed by the high demand for their delicious brewed products. The thirst for beer was awakened and could only be quenched by moving to larger premises. Eight years after opening, they moved with all the gear and mash paddles and transformed the old brewery into a brew pub. Although the output is still increasing today, Abita's craft beers are still brewed in small quantities and handcrafted. The private brewery is run by a group of local shareholders - some of whom have been there from the beginning and accompanied the team's first shaky steps more than 35 years ago.

Brewing water directly from the source

Like many craft brewers, the Abita team attaches great importance to the quality of their raw materials. This dedication goes so far that the brewery even chose its location based on it. Water is the basis of every beer and is often not sufficiently valued. This is because it is not a flavoring element, but a lot of work usually goes into the cool liquid before it can be used for brewing. Depending on the source, the water must be filtered, purified and chemically adjusted to the requirements before the brewing process. The brewers at Abita Brewing Company save themselves all of these work steps because they set up their tents in the catchment area of the Abita Springs. The water from this mountain spring is free of any pollution and harmful chemicals and can go directly into the brewing kettle. Such a valuable asset needs to be protected, which is why the brewers spare no expense or effort to save energy and water. Recyclable bottles, reducing waste through agricultural use of waste products and generating the brewery's own energy are just a few examples of Abita's environmental concept. But it's not just nature that is important to the team: the brewery collects financial resources through countless campaigns to actively support people in need. They have already used their beer to combat forest fires, flood disasters and other far-reaching events.

We are thrilled by the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of these brewers - their fine beer is the cherry on the cake and one more reason to support Abita.
