Every year on July 23rd, Bamberg celebrates the Day of the Preservation of Smoked Beer. This date is no coincidence: On this very day in 1635, the first smokeless malt kiln was patented, heralding the end of traditional smoked malt. The smoky aroma disappeared from beers everywhere—everywhere except in Bamberg. Here, two traditional breweries steadfastly adhered to the age-old method: Brauerei Spezial and the legendary Schlenkerla (actually Heller-Bräu Trum, but the most famous beer became the nickname for the brewery among Bamberg residents). To this day, the malt is kilned there over an open beechwood fire, and smoked beer remains a living piece of cultural history.
For this special holiday, Heller-Bräu Trum is creating an exclusive special edition of the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen. True to tradition, the beer remains unfiltered, and the yeast remains in the brew, lending the beer an additional flavor and creaminess. The taste combines the typical strong beechwood smoke aroma with a subtle caramel sweetness and a pleasantly spicy note. The yeast makes the Märzen more full-bodied yet milder, making it more accessible even to smoked beer newbies. Perfectly balanced, wonderfully smooth, and with a subtle effervescence—a delicious homage to Bamberg's centuries-old brewing tradition.
A beer for all those who are looking for something special and a worthy companion to the festival of smoked beer preservation.
