The annual hop harvest in late August and September is a joyous occasion. The newly replenished supply of aromatic cones not only secures the coming brewing year, but also gives breweries the unique opportunity to brew beer with fresh green hops. Normally, the hops are dried or processed into pellets or extract before they end up in the brewhouses. Once a year, however, they can be used completely fresh and unprocessed. Among the breweries that take advantage of this great opportunity is Camba Bavaria from Chiemsee.
Camba sources its hops from Hallertau and year after year eagerly awaits the delivery of fresh cones to brew its popular – and strictly limited – green hop pilsner. The brew is called Paragraph 14 and is made with a truckload of freshly harvested hops. The rare speciality flows into the glass in a pale gold tone and is crowned with a lush cap of thick, creamy foam. A floral scent with citrus-fresh undertones rises to the nose, and the first sip follows the same pattern: light-footed notes of floral hops enchant the palate. Because fresh cones were used, the beer has a fine earthiness and presents us with the full, juicy and spicy range of powerful hop aromas. A straightforward bitterness rounds off the taste profile harmoniously.
