This beer has an incredible story behind it. The little town of Weißenbrunn near Kronach has been a beer village for centuries. The local breweries serve a lively beer culture, which is the center of village life and is celebrated with events throughout the year. The highlight is the annual church fair, when the beer even flows out of the fountain. However, it doesn’t just flow from any fountain, but from the breasts of a mermaid.
Strange but true!
If you believe the local legends and sagas, then the mermaid portrayed is the young Katharina, called Jungferkättl. A long, long time ago, the daughter of a village lord took her own life because she had fallen unhappily in love. Kättl drowned in a pond and is said to have haunted the village for years afterwards. The brew in honor of the Jungferkättl is appropriately called Kättlbier and is brewed according to a 400-year-old family recipe. The raw materials for this come from the region and are gently processed into a light, unfiltered cellar beer. The traditional drink flows into the glass in a shiny golden amber tone and is characterized by its sparkling and spicy taste.
We raise our glass to the Jungferkättl — heroine of the beer village Weißenbrunn and probably the only mermaid who sometimes lets beer flow out of her nipples.
