There is a real sensation behind this beer: Brewmaster Hertl scoured his family’s photo albums and did some genealogical research in order to finally come across the very first brewing Hertl.

Brewer Herttel lived in medieval Nuremberg and worked hard at his craft. How do we know? David Hertl found his supposed ancestor in Mendel’s house book. This document comprises several volumes and contains all the members of the house of twelve brothers in words and pictures. The ancestor of today’s Hertels can be seen brewing in the kettle, stirring the mash paddle and making a fine brew. It is not genetically proven that the Nuremberg Herttel is actually related to David, but the similarity in appearance and the passion for beer cannot be denied. This is why master brewer Hertl named Herttel his great-great-great-great-great-grandpa and dedicated a beer to him, as he does with all his family members.

Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Ut-Opa is a bread beer that was created in cooperation with the natural bakery Oppel and is brewed with a large amount of malt bread. This old beer style was forgotten and is now experiencing a small revival. The bread, which would otherwise end up in the bin, is also revived.
