Kaltenberg Castle is not only the home of the König Ludwig Castle Brewery, but also the venue for a very special spectacle: in keeping with the tradition of this location, a grandiose knight’s tournament is held here every year. For more than forty years, fans of the Middle Ages have been meeting on three weekends in July to take a journey into the past together. In a dreamlike ambience, jugglers, musicians, fire-eaters, craftsmen and knights in traditional garb do their best to take visitors back to the Middle Ages. The festival takes place around the magnificently decorated castle and attracts more than 100,000 people every year.
The right beer comes from the in-house brewery: The Ritterbock with an impressive 9.0% ensures a relaxed atmosphere and not only strengthens exhausted riders after the exhausting tournament. Thanks to five months of maturation, the bock beer brings a wonderful depth of flavor and a skilful balance to the glass.
Kaltenberg’s seasonal strong beer is the color of ripe porcini mushrooms in the glass and is crowned with a lavish amount of creamy, hazelnut-brown foam. An abundance of malty scents fills the room and tickles the nose with notes of caramel and chocolate. The first taste unfolds with a wide range on the palate and delivers notes of velvety roasted cereals, tenderly melting toffee, dark chocolate, caramelized nuts and raisins marinated in rum.
