Saint Korbinian is a key figure in the history of the city of Freising and in the founding history of the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. He reached Freising in 724 and founded the Benedictine abbey there. He was known for his charitable work and his missionary work and laid the foundation stone for one of the oldest breweries in the world with the Benedictine monastery in Freising. To this day, the city’s patron saint is venerated and celebrated both in the brewery and in Freising itself.

The year 2024 marks the 1300th anniversary of Korbinian’s arrival in Freising and has been declared a festival year. The memory of Saint Korbinian will be honored with a Korbinian week, a parade, a Korbinian pilgrimage and numerous other events.

The Weihenstephan brewery has had its own homage to the great man for several years: the team expresses its admiration with a wonderfully strong double bock called Korbinian. The brew has a powerful 7.4% alcohol content and flows into the glass in a dark chestnut brown. A promising aroma rises from the fine-pored ivory head, reminiscent of candied fruit, caramel and cocoa. The taste is similar, bringing dried plums, dried figs, roasted malt, toffee, roasted nuts and tenderly melting chocolate to the tongue. A real treat that would surely have delighted Saint Korbinian too!
