Craft beer and coffee are two areas that have developed and specialized in parallel over the last few years. Flat industrial beer and sour filter coffee have faced sophisticated competition: hand-brewed specialties made from a variety of hops and malts have conquered the market and the selection of coffee varieties, roasters and preparation methods has also multiplied.
We draw this parallel between the two very different drinks because more and more craft brewers around the world have developed a taste for coffee. Collaborations between coffee roasters and breweries are springing up like mushrooms and giving us creations that combine the best of both worlds.
One of these all-encompassing creations is Baltic Barista, a coffee porter from the collaboration between the Berlin brewery BRLO and The Barn, a capital-based roastery that specializes in coffee beans from sustainable cultivation and fair trade. For their joint brew, the duo chose the Ethiopian bean variety Chelbesa: This espresso roast conjures up hints of chocolate, blueberry and orange blossom in the beer and harmonizes excellently with the malt-based brew. The coffee runs like a mahogany-brown thread through the entire beer experience and is reflected in the color, scent and taste. The strong roasted character and the aroma of freshly brewed mocha are accompanied by notes of delicately melting caramel, exotic vanilla, a hint of orange chocolate and a fine bitterness.
