The creative brewers' latest coup is Berd the 3rd: a light IPA that, with its refreshing, sparkling character, is based on Freiburg's way of life. A cheeky gargoyle laughs from the label and commemorates the 900th anniversary of the Gothic Freiburg Minster. Brewed with the highly aromatic hop varieties Simcoe, Mosaic and Amarillo from America, the IPA delights with a fine hop bouquet; two types of malt cleverly balance the hoppy splendor. 40 bitter units also ensure that the beer has structure and character.
Bert the 3rd flows into the glass in the color of liquid gold and presents itself clear and shiny. A good amount of white, airy foam crowns the beer. A fine smell of hops fills your nose and makes you want to take your first sip. The taste follows the olfactory first impression and is, as expected, hoppy: dry, bitter, fruity and floral, Bert enchants his fans.
The third Bert is a perfect after-work beer and tastes particularly good with Freiburg's local specialties: tarte flambée from the stone oven with bacon, a hearty sausage salad with fine onions or crispy fried potatoes bring out the flavors of the beer wonderfully.
