Although the good beers from the Mönchsambacher-Zendner brewery are not brewed by one, a monk adorns the logo and labels of all brewed items. The cheerful priest has a friendly smile on his lips and gives us a mischievous wink. Tonsure and robe clearly out him as a monk and the large jug of beer also indicates this. Monks were among the first brewers in our country, and brewing was part of their daily chores. It was the worldly balance to prayer and contemplation, and the good monastery beer brought in the money needed to maintain the monastery and for charitable purposes. During Lent, beer was the only thing monks consumed.
The monk with the cheeky halo in his shadow is the creation of Nuremberg artist Gerd Bauer. The cartoonist and illustrator was a friend of the brewery and provided them with the perfect mascot for their fine beer.
A favorite of the happy monk would certainly be the strong Hefe-Weizen. The Bavarian classic is known throughout Franconia and scores with a creamy mouthfeel, complex taste profile and fine spice. The typical aromas of banana, cloves and yeast dough are complemented by herbal notes, subtle citrus fruit and an elegant acidity. A stunning wheat from Franconia.
