Eucalyptus is something that you only find in decorative wreaths or flower arrangements in our latitudes. The aromatic plant prefers warm, more Mediterranean locations and can be found in southern Europe as well as in Australia. There, the silver-green leaves of the majestic trees serve as food for an extremely cute animal: the koala is one of the few animal species that does not mind the poison of the eucalyptus. The fluffy marsupials happily munch on kilos of fresh greens. Far away from home, there is a gardener who uses his green thumb to make all kinds of plants grow and thrive: Kris Emmerling is not only the first hop gardener in Bamberg for more than a hundred years, he also grows exotic eucalyptus in his personal Garden of Eden.
However, because he doesn’t have any koalas, the exceptional gardener had to think of a different purpose for his eucalyptus. As a brewer, he couldn’t help but try a Sud Eucalyptus beer and his courage was rewarded with an excellent drink. Koala is a Franconian specialty in golden amber, brewed with Cascade hops from the brewery’s own nursery and dry hopped. The fine fruitiness and sparkling freshness of this hop harmonize wonderfully with the light malt that the brewer used. The eucalyptus gives the beer an additional kick of freshness and makes Koala an unusual Bamberg beer treat.
