Zoigl is the name of a beer style that originally comes from the Upper Palatinate and goes back to a very special tradition. In the past, citizens of certain places had the opportunity. to brew their own beer in a shared brewery, the so-called Kommunbrauhaus. As a rule, there was a master brewer who accompanied the process and prepared the mash together with the residents of the community who were authorized to brew. After boiling and hopping the mash, everyone could take their share home and enrich it with yeast and ferment it at home in their own cellar. So it was up to everyone to decide how long the beer was stored.
Today this custom has largely been forgotten, although there are still breweries that sell beer for their own storage or at least have a Zoigl in their range.
This also applies to the brewery on Kreuzberg. The team brews a tasty black beer with a rustic character and a delicate smoked malt note using an old home brewer’s recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation. The delicacy brings a gentle 4.9% alcohol content and a deep mahogany brown with a creamy foam head to the glass. Velvety soft notes of strongly roasted malt, caramelized nuts, fine smoke and freshly harvested forest herbs form its extremely successful taste. A harmonious bitterness completes the play of aromas.
