Yeasts are the hobby of the guys behind the Flügge label. Exciting yeast varieties have also been put into the kettle again for the Grape Ale Otho. To give the beer a very special character (and an impressive 9.6% alcohol content), Dominik and Joachim Otho fermented it with Blaugies yeast and the infamous Brettanomyces yeast. The two yeast strains are known for their unique, aromatic flavors and make Otho a yeasty specialty. And because that wasn't enough for Flügge's wildly creative brewers, they stored the finished beer on grapes. The hand-picked fruits come from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines from the Daniel Mattern winery and give the beer a wonderfully full-bodied and dark fruity taste.
Otho flows into the glass in a clear chestnut tone and shows beautiful, red wine-colored reflections when the light hits it. An extraordinary scent rises from the beige, persistent head of foam. Heavy, sweet grapes combine with the unmistakable, “funky” aroma of Brettanomyces yeast, and a tangy fruit acid complements the interesting mix. The initial taste reveals a complex interplay of aromas that oscillates back and forth between grape and yeast. The grape offers a range of differentiated aromas, ranging from sour grape skins with a nice tartness to fresh grape juice and bitter grape seeds. The only time you could guess the percentages is the fiery warm finish.
Otho is an exceptional ale that we recommend to every ale fan. You've definitely never drunk an ale like this before!
