Fans of the Wiethaler brewery have been eagerly waiting for the re-launch of this beer for some time. In 2015, Groll'sche Doldenpils caused a stir on the national and international beer scene and gave the brewery from Lauf an der Pegnitz a large fan base. The lovers of Groll'schen Doldenpils had to wait two years for the good beer, now it was brewed and bottled again. The beer specialty was named after the forefather of Pilsner Josef Groll. The Bavarian lived in the 19th century and became known as the first master brewer to successfully produce a Pilsner. The young brewers at the Wiethaler Brewery are following in big footsteps and have only one thing to say: “Josef Groll would be jealous.”
The Groll'sche Doldenpils is brewed with fresh, undried hop cones. The green gold comes from our hop farmer friend Friedrich from Herpersdorf. Together with the Neunhofer Tennen malt, the hops are brewed using the traditional decoction mashing process. This method is able to extract the maximum aroma from the hops and transport it into the beer. The Groll'sche Doldenpils flows into the glass in a cloudy amber tone that is not typical of pilsners. The cloudiness comes from the fact that the Pils is not filtered, unlike traditional, modern Pils. The Wiethaler Pils also appears a little darker than its counterparts. However, the massive head of pearly white, medium-pored foam is compliant. The foam smells wonderfully hoppy: floral, fruity and herbal, a hop fireworks display unfolds in the nose. The initial taste delivers what the impressive scent promises: hops, hops, hops.
The Groll'sche Doldenpils combines everything you would expect from a pilsner: it is citrus-fresh, crisply bitter and exuberantly hoppy.
