Black beer is a style that traditionally does not come from Franconia. Nevertheless, the Franconian brewery Greif has dared to try the classic from East Germany.
The black beer from Greif is an unfiltered beer specialty in the color of freshly brewed coffee and has a pleasant 4.9% alcohol content. The Franconian brewers have put their very own stamp on the traditional beer style and made a specialty with a dark aroma and a creamy, almost oily consistency. The deep black beauty adorns itself with a delicate veil of white foam and smells wonderfully of caramel, espresso, chocolate and red fruits when poured. The first taste reveals a surprisingly slim, light-footed body with a full-bodied taste profile and fine, soft carbon dioxide. Sweet notes of roasted malt ensnare the palate and tickle the taste buds with hints of latte, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate, creamy toffee and candied dark fruit. A smoky tone underscores the play of aromas and skilfully rounds off the composition. The crowning glory is a sweet, roasted malty finish.
Thanks to its full-bodied, malty character, the Greifla in black is the perfect accompaniment to hearty Franconian cuisine: roast beef, dumplings, red cabbage, bratwurst, Schäuferla or a hearty snack harmonize wonderfully with the smoky elements and the warm, complex sweetness of the beer.
