Even if the Pilsner seems a bit monotonous in view of the unusual and hopped craft beers, we still appreciate the classic beer style for its finely dry freshness. A well-made Pils refreshes and delights with a successful balance of clean, clear bitterness, soft malt and well-placed hops.
A very successful example of the category is brewing Ulrich Martin. The master brewer from Schonungen produces a number of the finest Franconian brews in the Martin private brewery and, of course, also has a Pilsner on offer. His version brings a pleasant 4.9% alcohol content into the glass and is brewed with aromatic hops from Franconia’s hop gardens and spring barley from local farmers who are friends of ours.
The eternal classic flows into the glass in crystal-clear gold and is adorned with a handsome foam crown in pure white. A wonderful hop flower rises from the beautiful beer, bringing freshly mown grass, hay and floral notes to the nose. A touch of bread skilfully rounds off the first impression and makes you want to drink. This reveals a lean body with strong hops, soft malt and pointed bitterness. Grass and herbs, earthy notes, toasted bread and delicate hints of citrus flatter the taste buds. The bitterness is present from the first sip and increases to a dominant note until the dry finish.
