Rustic is a word that we associate with cozy pubs, wood-paneled rooms, oak corner benches with crocheted cushions, old-fashioned tiled stoves and grandma's living room. We think of country pubs, home cooking, shady spots under flowering chestnut trees, hearty snacks and freshly tapped beer. The Eschenbacher private brewery from Eltmann in Franconia has its roots in a centuries-old tradition and provides us with a brew that combines all our ideas of rustic in one tasty beer.
The brew is called Frankentrunk and is affectionately referred to by the brewery staff as "rustic dark". The dark lager has an alcohol content of 5.6% and appears in a clear chestnut brown in the glass. A mixed-pore crown of ivory-colored foam sits on top and smells temptingly of oven-fresh grain bread, caramel malt, roasted nuts and candied red fruits. The first sip reveals a surprisingly delicate body that enchants the palate with a symphony of toffee, grainy grain, dried plums, nuts and wild berries. A mild roasted bitterness gently rounds off the play of aromas.
The Frankentrunk is a gentle introduction to the world of dark beers and should appeal to anyone who likes malty brews. The sparkling, carbonated tipple has a roasted aroma without being too bitter or too heavy. Perfect for a snack, roast or a couple of sausages in a roll.
