Mulled wine is an Advent specialty that you don’t want to do without in the Christmas hustle and bustle of the overcrowded city, but now there are a number of excellent alternatives for anyone who is not a fan of hot wine.
Belgium’s contribution to a festive Advent season is, for example, the glow war from Liefmans. The special beer is made from a whole truckload of freshly harvested cherries and refined with a composition of Christmas spices. While the Belgian kriek tastes wonderful when cold, the mulled kriek really inspires when it is warm: The fruity cherry notes form a flavor-intensive base on which various spicy notes, berry tones and exotic vanilla notes blossom.
Liefmans Glühkriek has a look that is not dissimilar to that of mulled wine: the Belgian peculiarity flows ruby red into the glass, a delicate, creamy foam crowns the berry-colored splendor. At an optimal serving temperature of around 70 degrees, the Glühkriek exudes a seductive scent of juicy cherries, lightly flamed brown sugar and spicy cinnamon. The initial taste follows the festive first impression and warms body and soul with fruity cherry notes that combine on the tongue with the aromas of ripe berries and dried plums. Clove and cinnamon give the mixture a wintry atmosphere, while the fine acidity gives the beer an elegant lightness.
