Breakfast is the first meal of the day and for many it is also the best. Every country has its own breakfast traditions, which couldn’t be more different. While we Germans reach for muesli, scrambled eggs or jam sandwiches, the British prefer fried sausages, toast, beans and fried eggs. In many parts of Asia, people start the day with hearty rice dishes and congee, while in Italy they keep it quite simple with coffee and croissants. The Netherlands is not exactly known for its culinary diversity, but our neighbors to the west really indulge in breakfast: In addition to toast served with butter and chocolate sprinkles, there is also a Dutch version of pancakes and a cake that was specially designed for the morning. The ontbijtkoek (breakfast cake in German) is a type of gingerbread that is baked from rye flour, brown sugar or honey and spices and eaten toasted and spread with butter.
The Dutch brewery Uiltje has taken this classic and conjured up a wonderfully spicy bock beer. The 6.5% brew contains three types of malt and actual Ontbijtkoek as well as a whole range of warm spices and is incredibly similar to its model. The brew is a delicately cloudy fawn brown and tastes of oven-fresh gingerbread, dark caramel, winter spices and a hint of orange zest. Irresistible!
