Norway is home to one of the largest barrel cellars in Northern Europe and is therefore the perfect playground for breweries that want to refine their beers by maturing in oak barrels. Nøgne Ø is one of these experimental breweries and has a number of barrel-aged specialties in its range. Batten Down The Hatches is one of them and was perfected in the aromatic barrels of full-bodied cognac and aquavit. In the course of the aging process, the beer not only gains fine aromas of schnapps, oak and spices, but also deepens the original taste palette of the beer.
Batten Down The Hatches presents itself in a deep coffee brown in the glass, the small veil of nut-brown foam disappears quickly and leaves room for the heavenly scent: A dry smell of strongly roasted malt, exotic vanilla and good chocolate rises and lets you reach for the glass . The first taste is creamy and reveals the voluminous body. An exquisite mixture of cocoa, dark chocolate for men, spicy vanilla and dried red fruits caresses the palate. The barrel maturation is noticeable in the form of woody notes and a touch of aquavit.
