The namesake of this special beer from Nøgne Ø is an unusual sub-category of the fig tree. This species is the national tree of India and grows throughout Asia. The trees form aerial roots that grow in impressive formations from the branches down to the ground and reach a height of up to 30 meters. The plant is said to have spiritual properties and small temples and altars are often built in the sprawling trunks. Even if the banyan is called a fig, the fruits of the tree have nothing to do with the conventional fig fruit.
And there are no figs in the beer of the same name, Banyan By The Sea. But rhubarb: The aromatic stems give the light-footed Farmhouse Beer its refreshing character, which is characterized by fruity acidity and sweet fruit notes. The Norwegian Kveik yeast provides a special twist. The complex depth of taste and the woody spiciness is due to the barrel aging: Banyan By The Sea was stored in aromatic oak barrels for an incredible 20 months. This extraordinarily long storage rounds off the aromas and intensifies them.
The result of this complex process is a full-bodied beer with a voluminous aroma. The fruity acidity of the rhubarb and the unmistakable hints of the Kveik yeast give the beer an elegant lightness and skillfully balance the intense taste nuances.
