Abro Bryggeri

Sweden is currently the country of longing for many: its dense forests filled with bright birch trees and lush blueberry bushes are ideal for hiking and cycling, and the extensive lakes with their cold, clear water are perfect for a boat tour or a jump in the water cool water, the minimalist red wooden houses radiate cosiness and the many delicacies of the country such as cinnamon rolls, fish, meatballs or homemade crispbread are worth tasting and the local beer is also delicious. A traditional brewery from Sweden is Åbro Bryggeri, whose wonderful beer specialties we offer here.

A bumpy start

The founder of the brewery is Per Luthander. In 1856, the lieutenant was between two missions and wanted to settle in idyllic Småland for a while. Together with a master brewer from Germany, he set up the Åbro brewery and began brewing. After just one year, however, the master brewer left the company and Anders Andersson first took over the position and later, when Luthander had his next military deployment, also the brewery. At that time, the Swedish beer market was highly competitive: the towns and villages had a large number of small microbreweries and the competition was fierce. At the same time, inspired by Great Britain and America, initial considerations and calls for a nationwide ban on alcohol arose. The population's consumption had reached alarming levels and many people were calling for significant restrictions or even a ban on alcohol consumption. After no unified opinion could be found on this issue, an agreement was reached on rationing. Complicated times for a brewery, but Åbro survived the turbulence. Amid the heated debates, Axel Hermann Johansson took over the brewery. Johansson's descendants still run the company today.

A crisis-proof company

Despite the rationing, Åbro increasingly managed to gain a foothold in Sweden's beer landscape. Employees were hired and the brewery was expanded in proportion to the growing output. Although production was now going well, most of the employees still had a second source of income: many of them were farmers, shoveled snow in the winter or worked in other ways. When the brewery reached an output of one million bottles in a month, many of the employees were able to quit their part-time jobs and also received the finest coffee as a commission. The Dunge family has led the brewery with a firm hand, a lot of heart and passion for good beer through all the crises and disasters of the past and shaped Åbro into a permanent fixture in Sweden. We particularly appreciate the brewery because of its delicate beers. The hand-brewed specialties are characterized by taste, quality and a certain portion of hygge.
