Many Hanoverians may now cry out: How could the largest body of water in the Lower Saxony capital be spelled incorrectly! Take a deep breath and learn: In this case it is not a spelling mistake, but a clever play on words. Mashsee is the combination of the English word mash, which means mash, and the Maschsee, the popular local recreation area south of Hanover. From Hanover and with a kick, that’s what the Mashsee brewery stands for.
Beer revolution
The basic idea behind Mashsee was the rebellion against industrial beers and the impact this had on small, craft breweries. As founder Alexander Herold found out the hard way, large brewery groups are killing off their smaller cousins with buyouts and cheap competing products. The master brewer wanted to counteract this activity together with his business partner and beer sommelier Kolja Gigla. With handcrafted, excellent quality beers, they are declaring war on mass-produced products. True to the motto of quality instead of quantity, the team has four instead of forty beers in its range. This manifesto is accompanied by a great passion for beer and the love of drinking it together. Over a beer like this, Alexander and Kolja realize that the plan to found a brewery is more than just a fleeting beer whim and in 2013 they get down to business.
Four wins
The Mashsee Training Camp has now become a classic – a cold-hopped lager with another pun hidden behind its name. Not a beer that was brewed explicitly for athletes, but rather a training for the German palate untrained in craft beer and the master brewer, who has thus finally cemented his place in the squad. In addition to the lager, the eager taster can also expect a cold-hopped Baltic porter called Captain Blaubeer , the straightforward Baltic porter Hafensänger and of course a cold-hopped pilsner, Beverly Pils . Pils is particularly appealing to Alexander: you can recognize a true expert by the skilful use of hops, which makes a well-composed Pils clearly stand out from its bland colleagues. Alexander is such an expert and hop wizard and briefly summarizes his philosophy: More hops, more malt, more passion, more taste.
