Brauerei Karg

Weissbier and Munich go together like white sausage and mustard, pretzels and butter or dumplings and sauce. The city has a centuries-old beer culture and is the center of a region with an incomparably high density of breweries. Since 1912, the Karg wheat beer brewery has also contributed to the beer wealth of Bavaria's capital.

Family brewery from the start

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Karg brewery was still called the Hirschvogel wheat beer brewery. The premises previously housed a blacksmith shop and were then adapted to the requirements of everyday brewing. Andreas Karg took over the brewery in 1912 and brought a lot of hard-working hands with him. In addition to his wife Rosina, the family consisted of five children who were happy to help out and could always be found somewhere in the brewery. When the siblings had outgrown their children's shoes, their father was able to involve them in the day-to-day brewing business and prepare them for the takeover. In 1960 the time had come and daughters Centa and Franziska as well as son Andreas took over the management of the brewery. Rosina's husband Franz Schubert not only gave the brewery family its current name, but also a successor: Franz Schubert Junior was followed by Victoria Schubert, with whom the fourth generation of the family now works in the brewery. They all share a love and passion for good wheat beer and are committed to producing delicious brews. With quality, tradition and taste in mind, Karg Weißbier has been brewing the finest wheat beer for more than 100 years.

Experience the brewing process up close

If you would like to take a look behind the scenes, you can do so in the open-air museum on the Glentleiten. Located in the middle of a wonderful mountain panorama and on the picturesque Kochelsee, the restaurant not only offers a fantastic view, you can also watch the beer production live on site. In the show brewery there are two brewing kettles that are operated by the Karg brewery. Curious visitors can experience how the fine wheat beers are made and learn exciting facts about the brewing process using explanatory diagrams and information boards. The Glentleitner beer that is produced here is organic and can be tasted in the open-air museum's restaurant. In addition to the show brewery, the Schubert family also offers beer seminars and beer tastings. If you want to enjoy completely fresh beer, you have the opportunity to refill your beer directly in the show brewery every first Thursday of the month.
