Beer has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. Craft brewing has been done there for centuries and the country's cuisine goes hand in hand with the hearty, down-to-earth and rich beer creations. The country is dominated by large breweries, but also has a solid base of small, traditional breweries. The craft beer movement has now arrived there and is enriching the local beer market with unusual, innovative and hop-filled variants. The young team from MadCat Brewing is right at the forefront.
Great from the start
When the brewery opened its doors in 2011, it had a different name. The brewers and their equipment set up shop in a former club in the tranquil town of Jihlava and began brewing where the DJ used to send the dancing masses into ecstasy. The brewing project seemed to have a good start, because just a year later the team was able to achieve its first major successes. With their powerful semi-dark beer Zikmund, they impressed the judges of a renowned national competition and, with third place, earned themselves a step on the winner's podium. The winning streak continued and the small brewery was named first the third best brewery of the year and then the best microbrewery in the Czech Republic. With hard work, enthusiasm and a range of the finest craft beers up its sleeve, the brewery worked its way to the top of Czech brewing art and its reputation soon spread beyond the country's borders.
A heart for old buildings
This golden rocket launch not only ensured that everyone in the Czech Republic and surrounding countries soon knew about their beer, but also that everyone wanted to try it. Demand increased day by day and the nightclub's capacity was more than full. Around the same time, the brewers came up with the name MadCat and decided to give the brewery a new name. Excited by this step, the team started looking for new premises and fell in love with an old distillery in neighboring Kamenice. Against all common sense, the brewery decided to save the disused building and resume the craft in the hallowed halls. Work began in 2017 and the first batch of beer was brewed there just one year later. Further prizes and awards followed and MadCat Craft Brewing continued to expand its position in the Czech and international beer scene by participating in festivals, trade fairs and events.
