Anyone who wonders what mustard has to do with beer is probably not from Bavaria. Here, this harmonious combination has a centuries-old tradition. The white sausage breakfast has always been a popular reason to have a beer in the morning. A wheat beer tastes wonderful with a hearty sausage. The sweet mustard is the culinary crowning glory: it complements the aromas of sausage, pretzel and wheat and combines the individual elements to create a taste experience that couldn't be more Bavarian.
Müncher Kindl is a tradition-conscious mustard manufacturer from the idyllic capital of Bavaria and the first address in Munich when it comes to outstanding sweet mustard. The former butcher family has been producing their mustard for more than a hundred years. Originally, the mustard was just a small addition to the homemade sausages. However, the gift quickly turned out to be an absolute crowd puller. The people of Munich were literally fighting over the sweet mustard and rumor has it that some of them bought an extra portion of sausage just to get their hands on the good mustard. To put an end to this situation, the butcher family quickly founded Münchner Kindl and has been selling the mustard as a separate product ever since. The Munich residents are now in the fourth generation of making their mustard and are now offering it again at the traditional Viktualienmarkt after a long absence.
Even though the Hartl family is a real traditional business, they have never rested on their laurels. Despite masterful recipes, they are always tinkering and at the end of the 80s a major change was imminent. The third generation of mustard makers were well ahead of the times and acted as pioneers of modernity: in the early 90s, the entire production was converted to organic. Since then, all raw materials have come from purely organic farming and the ingredients that could not be obtained in organic quality were simply made in-house. The process took three years and involved the whole family. Ultimately, however, the effort was worth it, as the demand for organic mustard is huge. Münchner Kindl became a pioneer of the organic movement and supplied people far beyond the borders of Munich with the finest sweet mustard.
