Samuel Smith

Samuel Smith is the oldest brewery in the county of Yorkshire in northern England. Samuel Smith's excellent beer is still brewed in the hallowed halls of the Old Brewery in Tadcaster, built in 1758. In addition to the obligatory ale, the British have a lot more to offer and are absolutely up to date with creative beers like the chocolate stout .

Typically English

A special feature of the old brewery are the so-called Yorkshire Squares. These cube-shaped containers are typical of the north of England and are used for fermentation. Yorkshire Squares were originally made from stone or slate, but today most are made from stainless steel. Samuel Smith's Yorkshire Squares are still made of stone today and the special yeast is still the same as it was 200 years ago. To give the beer a particularly good taste, the hops are used whole as cone hops. The hops usually go into the kettle in the form of pellets or extract. In keeping with an old tradition, Samuel Smith's brewery still has its own coopers who look after the old oak barrels in which the ale matures. Two coopers work full time to repair the oak barrels and maintain them. With great attention to detail, classic and surprising beers such as the Imperial Stout are brewed here, making Samuel Smith a fixture on the international beer market.

A magnificent relic of the past

Samuel Smith is particularly proud of the brewery horses. The stately white carriage horses are housed in spacious stables behind the brewery and these days have a rather relaxed job. In the past, they were harnessed to the beer carriages and had to drive the full beer barrels from bar to bar. Before the automobile became widespread, this was the usual way to transport beer. Private individuals picked up their beer in person from the brewery, while everyone else had it delivered by carriage. Today the horses are only harnessed to the wagon on ceremonial occasions. Nevertheless, they are a landmark of the brewery and are valued and guarded like treasure. Numerous pubs and hotels now belong to the Samuel Smith empire and the brewery is known far beyond the borders of Great Britain.
