The love of beer not only draws people to the nearest pub, beer garden, or cellar every day, it also inspires some of us to make our dreams a reality. Although the founding stories of modern breweries often differ significantly, they are usually based on a certain passion for the amber nectar. Enthusiasm for hops and malt runs like a common thread through the brewing community – from hobby breweries in home kitchens to highly professional brewing facilities with an output of millions of liters. Stefan Sterl from Steinbüchl is also passionate about beer and was inspired by this fascination to found his own brewery.
Stefan's hometown is a tiny village with fewer than ten houses. This picturesque spot lies at an altitude of 800 meters, belongs to the municipality of Untergriesbach, and is less than 30 kilometers from Passau. Family, conviviality, good food, and craft beer have traditionally played a major role in this region and enrich everyday life in Steinbüchl as well. After enjoying other people's brews for years, Stefan decided in 2021 to take matters into his own hands. He founded Büchlbräu and was immediately responsible for every single step of production. From selecting the raw materials and developing the recipe to the brewing itself, everything was now in his hands. Fortunately, Stefan comes from a close-knit family: Grandma, Grandpa, Dad, girlfriend, and daughter were enthusiastic from the very beginning and continue to actively support Stefan to this day. The small family business can only survive because the Sterl family pitches in.
With their combined efforts, the Sterls have created an impressive range of beers. Each brew is made from select ingredients and with traditional brewing techniques. Despite the region's long brewing tradition and the distinctly Bavarian-sounding name Stoabial, which all their beers bear, Stefan's brew is cutting-edge and perfectly reflects the contemporary brewing scene. Craft beer is his passion and his daily bread. And because Stefan tirelessly strives for the best flavor, he has recently dedicated himself to barrel aging. Using a variety of wooden barrels, he refines his already delicious creations, giving them depth, complexity, character, and an extra boost of flavor with this elaborate extra step. Seasonal specialties like the Stoabial XMAS Festbier or his autumnal Halloween Pumpkin Ale complement the core range and demonstrate the Sterl family's love of experimentation.
