Allgäuer Brauhaus AG

The city of Kempten has a rich brewing history. The first brewing activities date back to the eighth century, when the monks of the local monastery brewed beer under the patronage of Queen Hildegard. And the roots of the traditional Allgäu brewery also go back a long way.

Beer with history

The famous Allgäu brewery goes back to the Abbey Brewery in Kempten. As early as the 14th century, there were reports of flourishing brewing operations in Kempten: the citizens of Kempten like to brew and drink beer. One place to go has always been the so-called inn behind the mountain next to the monastery. The popular inn has been preserved to this day and looks back on a centuries-long tradition. Because, in addition to the beer from the brewery, there were also numerous creations that were made in private stoves, Prince Abbot Bodman decided at the beginning of the 18th century that citizens were no longer allowed to brew beer. He put a stop to home brewers and instead promoted professional brewing. The Abbey Brewery went through countless changes of ownership, fell victim to disasters, was sold, expanded and finally officially became part of Allgäuer Brauhaus AG in 1911. The stock corporation brought together a hodgepodge of regional breweries and became the beer hotspot of the Allgäu. Each brewery brings with it a rich treasure of brewing tradition, making the Allgäuer Brauhaus a true cornucopia of Allgäu culture.

Yesterday Today Tomorrow

An absolute classic in the Allgäuer Brauhaus's range is the Büble . The good Bavarian Helle is a tribute to a tradition that has long been forgotten in many places: until well into the 1950s, you could buy beer in many breweries that was not bottled. The open beer was picked up in mugs and could either be stored at home or enjoyed straight away. Nowadays, that is no longer practical, so this tradition is slowly dying out. The Allgäuer Brauhaus wants to preserve the memory of this piece of beer culture with the Büble beer.

As a brewery with a tradition spanning more than 625 years, the Allgäuer Brauhaus feels obliged to uphold the brewing trade as part of our country's culture. Quality and the choice of excellent raw materials are a matter of honour, as is the training of young brewers and maltsters. The Allgäuer Brauhaus is taking bold steps into the future and has managed to strike a balance between tradition and innovation.
