“Once in a blue moon” is the English equivalent of the German “once in a blue moon” and the quintessence of the story behind the Blue Moon label.
After graduating from college as a brewer in Belgium, Keith Villa returned home with big plans. The young brewer wanted to bring the Belgian art of brewing and the refined brewing craftsmanship of the Europeans to the United States. In 1995, the craft beer movement was still in its infancy even there, and the American beer market was dominated by industrially brewed products and uniform-tasting lagers. Keith wanted to make a difference and introduce his fellow citizens to the enjoyment of highly flavorful Belgian beers. Just in time for the start of the '95 baseball season, the brewer released his first beer, Blue Moon Belgian White . The Belgian-style wheat ale and the well-traveled brewer's other creations are brewed in the hallowed halls of the Sandlot Brewery in Denver and at other locations. Legend has it that Keith's label is named Blue Moon because a friend of the brewer once said "A beer this good only comes around once in a blue moon." Once in a blue moon, you get to enjoy a beer this good. The Blue Moon Brewery was born, named, and soon became known beyond the borders of Denver.
As a creative brewer, however, Keith was not satisfied with simply reproducing the recipes of his Belgian mentors. To put his own stamp on his creations and adapt them to the American palate, the brewer thought of a little twist. Belgian beers are often characterized by their fine acidity. Keith complemented this aroma with a hint of orange peel and created a very unique character that unites all of his beers. The subtle sweetness of the fruit made Belgian beer more accessible to Americans and gave the beer its twist. Bars and pubs across the country serve the American-Belgian beer specialties with a slice of orange on the rim of the glass — this small detail perfectly rounds off the taste experience and makes Keith's creations something very special.
It is no longer just Americans who drink the delicious beers from Blue Moon: the Belgian beers with an American touch are enjoyed in more than 25 countries.
The real fans, however, can be recognized by the orange slice.
