Brauerei zur Malzmühle

Cologne is not only known for its majestic cathedral, the city on the Rhine also attracts visitors with its world-famous beer. No visit to Cologne is complete without Kölsch, and the people of Cologne themselves also like to drink a pint of the tasty local specialty after work. The Malzmühle brewery is one of the 24 breweries that are officially allowed to brew Kölsch as part of the Kölsch Convention.

Girl power

Grain and cereals were sold at Cologne's Heumarkt as early as the Middle Ages. Bakers and brewers came here to stock up on raw materials for their trade. In 1858, a particularly clever brewer decided to save himself the trip to the Heumarkt and founded the "Bier- und Malt-Extract-Dampfbrauerei Hubert Koch" on the spot. After Mr. Koch's management, the brewery became the property of the related Schwartz family and from 1912 onwards bore the name "Brauerei zur Malzmühle", which it still has today. The history of the brewery is shaped by strong women: after the death of her husband, Margaretha Schwartz ran the company and a woman was also at the helm during the Second World War. Sybille Schwartz had to witness the complete destruction of the brewery by the bombings of the war; all that remained of the brewery was the portal. But Sybille did not lose her courage and began rebuilding shortly after the end of the war: in 1948, brewing was allowed again, although the beer could only be taken away or drunk outside. The next woman at the helm was Anneliese Schwartz, who took over the brewery - which had since been completely rebuilt - in 1960. She restored the Malzmühle brewery to its former glory and made her building a popular meeting place for Cologne residents. The Malzmühle's most famous guest, however, was former President of the United States Bill Clinton. The politician was in Cologne on business and chose the Malzmühle to drink a cool Kölsch with his entourage.

Tradition with vision

Anyone who thinks that the Cologne-based Malzmühle is resting on its laurels is mistaken: the brewery team strives for perfection with great commitment and passion. The brewery has been expanded, modernized and supplemented with event rooms, a bar and a hotel. Even today, a woman runs the company: Melanie Schwartz is following in big footsteps and continuing the legacy of Margaretha and Sybille. Tradition is very important in the family business. Even though the beer is now produced using the most modern brewing systems, the focus is still on craftsmanship. Brewing is a real craft and the family recipe for the good Mühlen Kölsch is passed down like a treasure from generation to generation.

The Mühlen Kölsch from the Malzmühle brewery is a sip of Cologne, no matter where you enjoy it.
