The fox is a member of the canid family and can be found on almost every continent. Thanks to its outstanding adaptability, it can withstand the most adverse conditions and can be found in forests, deserts, mountains, and steppes. Humans have always been fascinated by the fox, and there are myths and legends surrounding it all over the world that date back thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and China, as well as in Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, and America, stories about this clever animal have been told and continue to be told. However, the fox doesn't just stand for intelligence; it also symbolizes deceit, magic, transformation, protection, and vitality. And good beer. At least that's the case at the Im Füchschen brewery.
It is believed that on Ratinger Straße – home of the Im Füchschen brewery – mash paddles have been swung and beer poured in the name of the fox since 1640. Because there were no house numbers back then, houses were named after other attributes, and here a fox carved from support beams adorned the facade. The Füchschen became the brewery's official name in 1848. The König family, who still control the company today, entered the scene in 1908 and immediately had to summon all their strength and stamina to survive the horrors of the First and Second World Wars. In the First World War, all the copper kettles used in munitions production fell victim, and in the Second World War, the entire brewery burned down in a bombing raid. However, they never gave up and kept the beer bar open through contract brewing. After its reconstruction, the brewery in the Füchschen became a truly trendy pub, welcoming illustrious guests such as Joseph Beuys and Udo Jürgens. The brewery achieved cult status when it became part of the Düsseldorf Kirmes in 1995.
The beer, of course, is responsible for the hype surrounding the brewery in the Füchschen. It all began with the classic Altbier : Since 1848, the finest Altbier has been brewed under the watchful eye of the Fuchs and according to a family recipe passed down from generation to generation. The brewery's own yeast gives the beer its unique character. In 2017, the repertoire was expanded to include a Pilsner , and there are also two non-alcoholic brews and a Christmas beer every year. Every single product, every bottle of beer, is crafted according to traditional brewing methods and under the expert guidance of master brewer Lena Backes. Quality and craftsmanship you can taste!
