The Greiz Brewery represents over a century of vibrant brewing tradition in East Thuringia. Since its founding in 1872, it has been closely linked to the town of Greiz and its people. What began as a joint project of three dedicated citizens has developed into a significant regional beer producer. To this day, the brewery combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology and a strong commitment to quality and taste. Its beers are an expression of regional identity.
The brewery's story began with the vision of building a high-performing local brewery. Less than two years after its founding, everything was ready, and the first beer was brewed. Over the decades, the business grew steadily, adapting to the changing demands of the times. Technological innovations, such as its own well and modern refrigeration technology, significantly improved production conditions. Structural changes, such as mergers with other breweries and later transformations into various legal forms, also shaped its development. The periods of the World Wars and the GDR economy were particularly challenging, as raw material shortages and political restrictions significantly hampered the brewing process. Nevertheless, the Greiz brewers managed to continue their operations and maintain their expertise. After German reunification, a phase of comprehensive modernization began. New facilities, environmentally friendly technology, and investments in infrastructure laid the foundation for a successful future. Since 2010, the brewery has once again been family-run, further strengthening its regional roots.
Today, the Greiz Brewery impresses with a wide range of specialty beers. Classics like Greizer Fürstengold, Export, and Bock represent the brewing expertise, as do more unusual varieties. For example, the Füllhorn honey beer is an unusual treat for those with a sweet tooth. With the exception of the honey beer, all beers are brewed according to the German Purity Law and are based on select ingredients, predominantly sourced from the region. This consistent focus on quality has been recognized with numerous awards, including prestigious prizes from the German Agricultural Society.
In addition to production, Greizer is also committed to the local community. Through experiential offerings such as brewery tours and tourist programs, the company brings its history to life and strengthens regional tourism. At the same time, sustainability, resource conservation, and modern quality standards play a central role in daily operations. Certifications confirm the high standards for production and environmental management.
The Greiz Brewery is therefore much more than just a beer producer. It is a piece of regional culture, a local employer, and a symbol of continuity. With its blend of tradition, diversity, and a sense of responsibility, it remains an important part of Thuringia's brewing landscape.
