In addition to stunning nature, idyllic landscapes and some wild moose, the Canadian maritime province of New Brunswick also offers something for thirsty hikers, cyclists and canoeists: the traditional brewery Moosehead Breweries Limited is based in Saint John and brews the finest beer for hard-working day-trippers and everyone else.
Moosehead Breweries' roots go back to the 19th century. In 1867, Susannah Oland brewed the first beer on her family farm. Her October Brown Ale sold like hotcakes and led to the one-woman operation developing into a successful craft brewery. Today, Susannah's descendants are in the sixth generation at the helm of the company and are still successfully brewing their beer. Four members of the family run the brewery together and carry on the legacy of their ancestors with pride and dedication. Moosehead is Canada's oldest privately owned brewery and one of the last major breweries still run by Canadians. The Oland family's passion has kept the company alive for centuries and carried the team through difficult times. The brewery survived devastating fires, two world wars, fierce competition and Prohibition without catastrophic losses. On the contrary, the obstacles it has overcome have made it what it is today – an institution for Canadian brewing tradition and a home for hand-crafted, tasty beer specialties.
Moosehead Breweries Limited is already in its sixth generation of operation and the seventh generation is already in the starting blocks: in order to continue the family tradition, the next generation is learning the craft and secrets of good beer. The brews owe their unmistakable taste and character to the men and women behind the kettles, who produce the finest creations using family recipes passed down over centuries. The product range of this traditional brewery includes classics such as Canadian Lager and modern beer specialties such as the fruity, aromatic beer mixed drinks from the Shaker range . The brewery caters to every taste and is taking bold steps into the future with young, fresh ideas, the latest technology and hand-picked raw materials. The brewery's heraldic animal is, of course, the eponymous moose: the deer with the majestic antlers is at home in the deep forests of Canada and stands for the values of adaptability, strength and movement. In the past, the moose played an important role in people's diet, especially in the less densely populated regions of Canada and North America.
