David Hertl, the head and heart behind the Hertl brewery, is a beer lover through and through: Always in a good mood, you can hear the master brewer laughing loudly from afar as he shows friends and guests around his brewery. David Hertl brews exceptional craft beer with a lot of craftsmanship and expertise. One is not enough, we can promise you that much.

Family first

The names of Hertl beer already give it away: family is very important here. The Kellerbier Opas Liebling and the sunny lager Mutti's Sonnenschein are a tribute to the people who made Hertl beer possible in the first place. Papa Bernd, himself a winemaker and beer sommelier, supported the shared passion from the beginning and is now an integral part of the Hertl miniature empire. As is the rest of the family, because every hand is needed in Franconia's smallest brewery. Hertl beer is handcrafted through and through. Every step, from grinding with the drill-driven mill to labeling the bottles, is carried out by the Hertls themselves. Incidentally, the labels are stuck on by Mama Vroni with a lot of love and care - family devotion at its purest! So is it any wonder that the brewery was quickly built in the old pigsty next to David's parents' house?

Franconian through and through

Not only is the brewer a Franconian original, his beers are also genuine Franconians. With regional ingredients, labels from a family friend and pickles from the brewery's own pickle farmer, David's Hertl beers can rightly be described as Franconian masterpieces, even if they are much more innovative and rebellious than many Franconian classics. In order to spread the word about traditional Franconian craftsmanship, David sometimes has a Korean apprentice or invites workawayers to stand at the kettle with him. Or he takes a beer ingredient that has only been used to brew beer for centuries and simply makes something completely different out of it. Gin, that is. The hop gin comes in a stylish clay jug with a funky label. Creative, different, delicious - typical of David and his Hertl beer. David doesn't live up to the reputation of being a grumpy, unfriendly Franconian at all. Thank God, as people here in Franconia like to say.
