Nestled in the heart of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by pristine nature and vibrant artisanal traditions, lies the long-established Rother Bräu family brewery. Since its founding in 1788, it has been an integral part of the region's culinary landscape. For generations, the company has maintained its distinctive character, continuing to combine traditional brewing methods with a strong commitment to quality and local roots. Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Rother Bräu stands for authentic beers that reflect their origins and are renowned far beyond the Rhön region.
The origins of the brewery date back to a brewery and inn at an old mill in Roth. As early as the 19th century, its beers enjoyed an excellent reputation. A decisive step was taken in 1872 when the brewery became family-owned – a continuity that continues to this day. Despite its modest size, the Weydinger family has always been open to technological innovations. The use of a steam engine at the beginning of the 20th century and the switch from horse-drawn carts to motorized vehicles testify to this progressive spirit. However, the political changes of the 20th century presented the company with significant challenges. After the Second World War, a large part of its previous market collapsed. Nevertheless, the family succeeded in securing the company's survival and expanding it for the future. In the following decades, the brewery was modernized and relocated to a new site. These investments laid the foundation for Rother Bräu's continued success even in a changed market environment.
Today, Rother Bräu stands for a balanced selection of classic and traditional beer specialties. In addition to traditional varieties, the organic beer line plays a particularly important role. As early as the late 1980s, the brewery was among the pioneers in this area, consciously focusing on environmentally friendly brewing methods. The range is complemented by so-called monastery beers, which recall the brewery's former collaboration with a monastery brewery and are served in its own restaurant.
A key factor in the quality is the exceptionally pure brewing water from deep within the Rhön Mountains, as well as the use of regional ingredients. At the same time, the Rother team is actively committed to protecting the natural environment that shapes their homeland. Sustainable investments in modern technology and environmentally friendly processes underscore this commitment.
Rother Bräu embodies a piece of regional identity: shaped by family tradition, a sense of responsibility, and a passion for enjoyment. The Weydinger family's beers represent the Rhön region, continuity, and a close connection between people, craftsmanship, and home.
