Breweries and their cozy pubs are a magnet for pleasure-loving visitors and attract the vibrant life. Many brewers have given whole districts a renaissance by choosing their location and brought a breath of fresh air into abandoned buildings and neighborhoods. A small miracle like this also took place in Nuremberg: With his Schanzenbräu, Stefan Stretz helped the Gostenhof district to change its image and turn it into a lively meeting place for young and old. How did he do it? With the finest beer, of course!
The story of Schanzenbräu, however, began some time before the move to Gostenhof. The first brewing attempts were made in the Bärenschanze district. At that time, the brewer proved his true skills, because his initial brews were not brewed on a proper brewing system. Instead, the resourceful beer lover put together his equipment from former wash kettles and sawn-open beer barrels and brewed with whatever he could find. That was in 2004. Three years and a few beers later, Stefan moved to Gostenhof with all his belongings. A stone's throw from the current pub, the brewer found premises that offered a little more luxury and professional equipment. It would be another eight years before Stefan could give the go-ahead for his own brewery. In 2015, construction began in the neighboring Nürnberg-Höfen. A year later, the brewery was finished and the fun could begin. Stefan's patience was rewarded with success.
The fine creations are served in the Schanzenbräu bar. The rustic pub has breathed new life into the somewhat disreputable Gostenhof district. Stefan chose this location very deliberately and had a plan from the start to spruce it up. His bold move to open a pub in Gostenhof encouraged others to follow suit: Today, the district is a lively meeting place and offers its visitors a potpourri of different shops and offers. Sometimes all it takes is one person with vision, as Stefan has proven. And he also brews delicious beer. The visionary's range is a fine, small selection of Nuremberg classics. All beers are unfiltered and are made according to the specifications of the Bavarian Purity Law with craftsmanship and passion. Stefan's Kehlengold is particularly popular, refreshing and delightful with its full-bodied character and stable malt body. In addition to his work as a brewer and urban developer, Stefan is a Bavaria ambassador and travels the world in this capacity to make Nuremberg known with its specialties and attractions.
