Red is a signal color that can mean very different things. Stop signs in bright scarlet warn us to stop at intersections, the red traffic light tells us to stop, the white spotted caps of fly agarics warn us in red of their toxins while berries signal their ripeness and the zenith of their sweetness in the same color. We perceive red as seductive, dangerous, warm or exciting.
In the case of this brew, red is found in the title and describes the wonderful color of the strong beer. However, we also think that the red symbolizes autumnal delight and gives a warning: If you don’t grab it quickly enough, you will miss out on this strictly limited delicacy!
The Roter Bock from Schanzenbräu is released every year in November and is often sold out by the beginning of December. This is because the brewing piece not only brings a whopping 7.0% alcohol content, but also a whole lot of flavor into the glass. The chestnut brown beer with a ruby shimmer smells of roasted malt, cocoa and dark berries. The taste test reveals notes of delicately melting chocolate that meet creamy caramel, candied red fruits and restrained hops on the palate.
